VOLUNTEER TO HELP BAND PAGE

(Updated opportunistically)

BANDING OPPORTUNITIES

Both the NWA wood duck and NDOW's post-season banding projects will begin 2010 operations on February 1, 2010.

We will be using this NWA page to provide information about dates and times to come help band.  I won't be sending out emails about when we are doing things, this webpage will be the ONLY source of info.  It only takes me 5 minutes to make a post, so check back OFTEN if you are interested in coming out.  I will try to post as soon as I know we will be trying to catch birds.  Sometimes notice will be SHORT!  I will provide dates, times, and maps to locations when we decide to make a capture attempt.

If you have any questions, email Chris Nicolai at nicolai@unr.nevada.edu

OPPORTUNITIES TO VOLUNTEER

Monday, February 15, 2010 (posted 2/12/10 11:53am)

A large catch od wood ducks is anticipated for Monday morning.  This is the one you don't want to miss.  Would have to be in Fallon at sunrise.  Contact Chris or Steve for info.

Friday February 12, 2010 (posted 2/12/10 9:33am)

The largest catch of wood ducks occurred this morning with 70 being captured.  Volunteers Would have been helpful this morning.  If interested, come on out, the banding doesn't get much better than the spring effort before natural foods become abundant.

Weekend of February 12-14, 2010 (posted 2/11/10 4:18pm)

Wood duck banding is going great with many bait sites being hit.  There are plans to take rocket shots each day from Friday-Sunday.  In addition, Steve is having success with passive bait traps.  With these bait traps, there should be wood ducks available for banding each and every day for some time.  Contact Steve Olson at (320) 266-5808 for exact locations, times, and directions.  Carson Lake banding is on "furlough" right now due to extremely muddy condition on most of the area.  Several bait piles are placed.  Just some time and patience for birds to start using the bait.

February 9, 2010 (posted February 8 3:27pm)

Meet at 6:45am for a wood duck capture.  The capture will be near where MacLean Rd. crosses the Carson River.  This area had 58 wood ducks this morning.  Odds should be relatively high for a good capture.

February 4, 2010

This is the first post of the year.  We have been baiting sites along the Carson River and at Carson Lake.  Things are looking good.  We have had 2 spur of the moment captures on wood ducks along the river.  Ducks are just starting to hit bait piles at Carson Lake.  We are hoping to start catching birds at Carson Lake early next week.  I'll be sure to post when I know something is coming up!  Be sure to check this webpage each and every day if you really want to come out.
