Message From Our President
While it has been sometime since I have communicated with you, the membership of NWA, I can assure you that the Board has been busy with an array of issues important to the welfare of our unique wetlands.
Following is a list of issues that we are working on to try to ensure the best future outcome for the wetlands.
(1) Carson Lake Wildlife Management Area Dike.
Emeritus Board Member Norm Saake presented a detailed proposal to the Board to build a dike at the Carson Lake WMA to preclude flooding of most of the prime marsh area there. In the past 8 years, we have experienced 3 major flood events which have been devastating to the wetland values there. We have worked with the Nevada Department of Wildlife to determine if we can collaboratively move forward with the project.
At our February 12th Board Meeting, we approved $35,000 for an engineering assessment for construction of this dike, so at this time things are moving forward.
(2) Ensuring future water deliveries to Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge.
By the middle of 2027, the US Fish & Wildlife Service anticipates that they will be out of funding to pay the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District to deliver water to Stillwater NWR. We have been working with our congressional delegation to try to ensure funding for future water deliveries.
This is a work in progress, and we may be calling on our members in the future to help with this effort.
(3) Proposal to develop a wetland management science center.
Board Member Jim Giudici brought forth a proposal to develop a wetland management science center to help train future wetland managers on the science of managing interior basin wetlands such as we have in most of Nevada and the Great Basin.
The Board approved Jim to move forward with this project, as he has secured funding to do this for one year with future funding dependent on how the project moves forward.
(4) Annual Fundraising Dinner.
The annual Reno Chapter Fundraising Dinner is scheduled for August 29th, and the dinner planning committee is busy working on this important event.
As always, we hope that we can count on your continued awesome support of our cause!
I hope that you are all enjoying this mild Spring weather.

NDOW: Support the Youth License Fund
Help Nevada youth get outdoors by making a small donation .
The Nevada Youth License Fund is a donation-driven program that provides free youth hunting and fishing combination licenses to kids ages 12–17, helping remove cost as a barrier and giving more young people the opportunity to explore Nevada’s outdoors. Every dollar donated goes directly toward covering the cost of these licenses so kids can fish, hunt, and build lifelong connections to the outdoors.
Since the program began, thousands of youth have received licenses through the fund, many of them first-time anglers and hunters. Licenses are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis as long as funding is available, which means donations are critical to keeping the program open and available to families.
By supporting the Nevada Youth License Fund, you are helping:
- Introduce youth to fishing and hunting
- Support physical and mental health through outdoor recreation
- Build the next generation of conservationists
- Create lifelong outdoor memories for Nevada families
